Day in a life: Group Account Director, Kate Burton

As the Group Account Director for The Co-operative Food and regional retail groups, Kate Burton came to The River Group having previously worked as a Publishing Director at a multichannel publishing agency and as an editor in customer publishing.

My average day always starts with…

…checking emails on the iPad en route to work.

My favourite thing about my job is…

…gaining a client’s trust, signing off on a new project or solving a crisis.

Today I am working on…

…award entries, 2015 budgets, staffing changes at my client’s HQ, a photoshoot, reducing print costs, building an app, costing production of 10 videos, and planning for a special print project.

What we do is essential to The Co-operative’s marketing campaign because…

…we provide them with the content through which they engage with their customers on a daily basis. From print, apps and social media to video and website copy, we ensure their message is clear and strong.

The soundtrack to my working week should be…

…Donna Summer’s She Works Hard for the Money.

The best thing I have learned in my career so far is…

…paying a compliment when deserved goes a long way and costs nothing.

The brand I most admire is…

…Amazon. At only 20 years old, it is constantly developing into new areas and most recently has entered the art market and started producing video, music and literary content.

The person who would play me in a movie is…

…Tina Fey from 30 Rock (if she grew and filled out a little bit!).

The idea I wish I had come up with is…

…Google. I’ve blanked out what life was like without it.

My favourite time of the day is…

…bedtime.

When I was a kid I wanted to be…

…an actress.

My best advice to anyone wanting to get into this industry is…

…don’t lay claim to simply wanting to ‘work in media’ – take the time to understand the many roles and the vast differences between them!
